The Belleville Hospitals’ Golf and Tennis Classic has become a premier golfing event and an annual tradition for many of its participants. Its success can be attributed to the dedication and talents of the committee. The first Belleville Hospitals’ Golf Classic was held on June 11, 1984, at the St. Clair Country Club. The original committee included professional golfer and former Masters Champion Bob Goalby as Honorary Chairman. Then, in 1993, the Classic was expanded to include a tennis tournament. Consequently, the event became the Belleville Hospitals’ Golf and Tennis Classic.
Since its inception, charitable contributions and involvement by the many friends and supporters of Memorial and St. Elizabeth’s Hospitals have made it possible to raise over $1.4 million. The funds generated by the annual Belleville Hospitals’ Golf and Tennis Classic help the hospitals to continue to provide the residents in the communities served by Memorial and St. Elizabeth’s Hospitals with the latest in quality healthcare services.
The Friends of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Foundation has utilized the proceeds from the Belleville Hospitals' Golf and Tennis Classic to assist in the purchase such items as the OB TraceVue™ fetal monitoring program for the St. Elizabeth’s Mother Child Department, recliners for patient rooms, as well as the ability to fund a variety of patient-care enhancement programs.
Over the past few years, Memorial and St. Elizabeth’s Hospitals have coordinated their efforts to focus on projects that benefit the missions of both hospital foundations, including the purchase of the pre-hospital 12-lead ECG/EKG equipment for our local ambulance providers and support of programs and services at The Cancer Treatment Center, jointly owned and operated by Memorial and St. Elizabeth’s hospitals.
To help better understand planned giving including how gifts can be made through a will, charitable trusts, life insurance and endowments, the Friends of St. Elizabeth's Hospital offers estate planning seminars for general members of the community and training classes for tax professionals. These events are held as needed. To learn more about an upcoming estate planning event, please call the Friends of St. Elizabeth’s office at 618-234-2120 ext. 2728.
Since its inception in 1983, the Elizabethan has become a traditional fall event for many members of the community. Originally known as the “Elizabethan Holiday”, the event was started by the St. Elizabeth’s Auxiliary as a luncheon and fashion show designed promote positive public relations for the Hospital, support the Hospital’s mission, and to honor the Feast of St. Elizabeth (celebrated in November). In 2012 the tradition evolved into what is now known as “The Elizabethan”, a gala which includes an evening of fellowship and fundraising accompanied by dinner, music, and celebrations.
Throughout its history, proceeds from the event have funded equipment purchases and supported healthcare programs throughout St. Elizabeth’s Hospital as well as provided annual scholarships to students pursuing careers in the medical and healthcare fields. Proceeds from this year’s event will continue the long-standing tradition of supporting healthcare programs and services provided by St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
Today, the Elizabethan remains a key fundraising event for the Friends of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Members of the Friends Board of Directors, the Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers and many dedicated colleagues and physicians help to make the event a success. Their dedication to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is a beautiful demonstration of our Every Hand HealingTM approach to healthcare excellence.
